"The 1-3-5"
In 1995, DMA was a story analyst for a major Hollywood production company. Analysts, or "readers," break down scripts for structural elements, character development, dialogue and overall "oomph." There are two active options: "consider" and "pass." The third option, "buy," is urban folklore.
At K/M, DMA developed her "1-3-5 System" of story structure for screenplays then lit adaptations. The 1-3-5 system synthesizes character arc, structure and plot in a simple concept. Within a year, she was teaching the popular system at the prestigious UCLA Extension Writing Program, then to private students across the country, then as the featured writing program for director/writer/actor Robert Townsend's film school "Townsend Tech."
In 2002, "The 1-3-5," as it was commonly called, became the backbone of MOVIE IN A BOX, Hollywood's first and only comprehensive, one-day filmmaking seminar. DMA continues to offer private 1-3-5 seminars and 1-3-5 script analysis to clients worldwide.
